Folks,
Just as an update, the Bergeron Bike-Pedestrian path is scheduled to start construction on the 21st of September and be completed by November 15th.

| Frank, I see that they have started working on the bike/walking path ... or at least I assume that is what they are doing ... can you explain why they are putting it on the side with the telepohne poles? The path from Hillcrest to Page Road is on the other side ...

| Along the same line of question, why was the path not designed to be on the same side of Albuquerque from beginning to end?

Folks,
When Albuquerque Avenue was laid out many years ago, space or an easement was left on particular sides of the road. As Albuquerque was designed by segment, from what I know the design was made with the bike path on various sides of the road to avoid wetlands, homes, etc. and the designers may not have considered how it matched up. I'm not personally aware of the decisions made in this regard.
The best I can tell you is that we have today, no choice but to place the bike path where is is being build. Years ago, someone should have thought this one through and unfortunately we have to go with it today.
Regards,

So, the bike path is looking great!
Not trying to be a stick in the mud, but I have a question... are they really going to pave the northern portion with those 4 telephone poles (2 right near the Hillcrest intersection, 2 further up) right in the middle of the path??

Peter,
Is this a want or a need?
They were supposed to be moved last weekend but were not for some reason. Both Road Agent Pinciaro and American Excavators (doing the job) have been on their case for a few months to move the poles. We are still hoping that they are moved this week.

Anja,
I was thinking the same thing when I heard that on the news this AM. I don't know right now. I'm hoping not but I could forsee a delay while Fairpoint gets its financial act together.

Just drove down Albuquerque. Fairpoint is almost done moving the wires to the new poles, and old poles in the middle of the bike path have been taken out.
On several occasions over the past few weeks my whole family has enjoyed ready access to the newly completed path. Kudos to everyone invovoled in bringing it to fruition.

| Will there be cross walks painted at the intersection of Alberquerque and Hiilcrest? I think it would be a good idea where you have to cross to continue on the bike path.

| Has anyone else had the experience of having a car stop dead in the middle of Albuquerque because they see the mini-stops signs for the bike path and think they are for the roadway? I almost rear-ended someone who suddenly slammed on their brakes - and then kept stopping at every intersection. My daughter pointed out they were stopping at the little bike path stop signs. She said she was driving with another adult over the week -end who also thought they had to stop at every mini stop sign....

I also did notice that happen. When I first saw those signs, I did a double take.
In my opinion, they should have ALL been placed on the far opposite side of the path (furthest away from the street) That is such a narrow path. I do not think anyone on the path would get confused if all the signs (in both directions) are on the same side of the path. Just a thought. The old saying; hindsight is 20/20

| I thought it was pretty dumb when they first went up ... I'm sure it's contributed to many a near-miss or small fender bender ... why have them in the first place??? Do pedestrians and bicyclists really need to be told to stop and look before they cross???

Anja, that was pretty good, I never heard that saying before.
When I was young, I was just told, "Don't be a dumb ass, have some common sense, look both ways before you cross the street so you don't get run over and killed by a car"
It worked for me. No stop sign was necessary after that little talk!

| Noticed that fencing is being put up along the bike path ... the bike path has been open for a while now, people use it every day ... not to ask the stupid question, but shouldn't the fence have been put up before the bike fence was used? Don't people know not to walk near the edge, or is that like the cross walks and stop signs along the bike path?

Folks,
On the matter of the stop signs, the same issue happened in the past with the earlier sections of bike path constructed. We eventually removed the stop signs to prevent the problem. In this case, if is a federally funded project and the signs must go up, but I'm sure that someone will be taking them down after the project is completed.....
On the matter of fencing, I'm not sure what you are referring to in this case but will take a look when I get home.

Anja, this may put your questions into perspective
| Quote: | | Do pedestrians and bicyclists really need to be told to stop and look before they cross??? |
| Quote: | | Don't people know not to walk near the edge |
I was in a department store today that happens to sell childrens strollers. There was a tag on the stroller that read; "Remove your child before folding and storing this stroller".
So, you see Anja, we really DO need to tell people to stop and look before crossing the street!
And, when you walk into Dunkin Donuts and order a hot coffee, they REALLY do need to tell you (in writing on the cup) that the coffee is HOT!

The emoticon that you used is called "Productive". Apparently, Peter left that emoticon in the quote when he copied what you wrote.

Speed walkers. Sometimes they get going so fast that they can't stop, hence the warning sign.
Wait until you see the new radar for walkers and bikers that we have from the grant. We got someone the other day doing 3.5 MPH. Cost them a $50 fine. We also got someone for texting while walking......

What I find even more humorous is that the "warning" sign for the path is set further away from the actual intersection stop sign than the warning sign for drivers heading south towards town hall. It's probably only 20 "real" feet or so, but the braking distance for them must be higher by federal standards... What's next, rumble strips?

| The rumble strips are on the new section of walking path that was constructed on the north side of Hillcrest ... the problem with these metal rumble strips is that they get very slippery with snow, sleet, freezing rain, etc. ... can you see potential for a lawsuit for a slip and fall?

Don't worry Anja, I would expect that the plow blade will dig them up in short order......... I was dubious about them when I saw them being installed.

Yes, everything you see being installed for the path is from the stimulus money.
Just to be clear, the town did not ask for all of these items. Some of the signs, etc. are being installed because it is part of the federal or state requirements of the program to do so. The town is just looking to complete the path and the rest is something that we are having installed because the state/federal governments says we must. There is also a heck of a lot more accounting and reporting that is required for this project due to the stimulus grant. I guess it is like the $250 hammers that are boughts by the feds all the time.

Frank,
Will there be crosswalks painted at the interscetion of Albequerque and Hillcrest where you have to switch sides of the street? I think a sign there warning vehicles to watch out for kids and adults crossing the bike path would be a good thing. Is that in the State's requirements?

Frank,
Happy New Year, I was wondering if you got an answer on the cross walks. I was walking my puppy with my 7 year old the other day and we safely crossed over the bike path across Alberquerque and then started to cross the Hillcrest side and a car thought that would be the best time to take left after blowing off the stop sign. We were right in the middle of the street when the car passed just a foot behind us.
Thanks for any update!

Jason K.,
Sorry for not getting back on this one. I spoke with the Road Agent and he says that there will be a cross walk added at the Albuquerque/Hillcreast intersection. The intention is to add it in the Spring when the weather (hopefully) warms up some. He was unsure how the cross walk will be done (diagonal or 2 - 90 degree ones) and whether or not there will be cross walks added at the other new intersections. When I spoke to him he had the plans at the Highway Garage.
He will be coming into the BOS meeting tonight to discuss the Albuquerque Ave culvert and I will ask him then.
Regards,
